Cornerstone Community Church of Atascadero

We are a healthy, gospel-driven church committed to Christ-centered, expository preaching.

History

Cornerstone Community Church began in 1985 as a Bible study in Atascadero, California.  As more people attended, a call was made to the Evangelical Free Church of America (EFCA), and guidance was provided in how to establish a church.  David Lee served as the first pastor from 1988 to 1991. Then Steve Harms served as the pastor until 1999.  In July of 2000, John Marc Wiemann accepted the call to pastor the church.  At that time weekly church attendance was about 50 people. In 2001 the name of the church was changed to Cornerstone Community Church (we are still an EFCA church).  In 2003 a children’s ministry building was added and all loans were paid off.  In 2013 we purchased the adjacent property of 5 acres and a larger church building and paid it off in 2016.  Additional pastor and staff members have been added as the church has grown, and there are currently 5 elders and 23 deacon and deaconesses.

Our Mission

To Know Christ and Make Him Known

Current Average Attendance

Our average Sunday morning attendance is approximately 450 (325 adults and 125 children). We have a two-service format as attendance grew to be greater than the seating capacity of our sanctuary. Both of our Sunday morning services are identical; we don’t have a “traditional” service and a “contemporary” service.

Student Ministries

The Cornerstone Youth Group is made up of approximately 50 junior and senior high students with an average Wednesday night attendance between 30 and 40. It is led by a great team of adult leaders and a peer leadership team called the S.O.S (Serving Other Students) Team. While students certainly enjoy youth group and have fun together, the primary focus is growth through the study and application of God’s Word. On Sunday mornings the Jr High and High School students remain in the worship service – there is not a separate Sunday school. Each summer the students and leaders go on a weekly discipleship and service trip.

Missions

We currently partner with six different missionaries in different regions of the world. Priority is given to church planting in unreached or under reached nations and training of indigenous pastors. The missions’ budget includes monthly support for Cornerstone Community Church missionaries, annual church missions conference, short term missions and emergency funds.  We partner with local outreach ministries such as Child Evangelism Fellowship and Lifeline Pregnancy Center.

Location

Cornerstone is located on the central coast of California in Atascadero, about midway between Los Angeles and San Francisco on Highway 101.  We are about 20 minutes inland from Morro Bay on the Pacific Ocean, and 25 minutes north of San Luis Obispo.  Our region is far less densely populated than urban California cities.  It is not uncommon for people to live on larger parcels of land (1+ acres). Most church attendees live in Atascadero, Templeton, or Paso Robles.
