Position: Senior Pastor
Reports to: Church congregation and the Deacons
General Description: The Senior Pastor provides spiritual, pastoral, outreach, administrative, and servant leadership to the congregation of Heartland Baptist Church so the congregation might fulfill its mission as a light of Christ in the City of Norfolk, Nebraska. The Senior Pastor relates to and connects with multiple generations. In addition, the pastor represents the congregation in denominational or community organizations and activities to learn new ways that the church can support and engage with the surrounding area. Recognizing the importance of spiritual health and one’s personal relationship with God, the Senior Pastor takes time for regular prayer, Bible study, rest, and recreation. Lastly, the Senior Pastor extends God’s grace to others and leads by example as one who is relational, authentic, transparent, and humble.
Qualifications:
- A clear testimony of faith in Jesus Christ.
- Consistent spiritual and moral character and lifestyle, complying with the constitution of Heartland Baptist Church and the biblical leadership qualifications of an overseer described in 1 Timothy 3:17 and Titus 1:5-9.
- Competent in interpersonal relationships, organization, and administration.
- Potential and desire to remain in a long-term ministry at Heartland Baptist Church.
- Strong in biblical preaching and expository preaching.
- History of faithful ministry experience.
- A licensed and ordained minister of the Gospel based on a 4 year degree in ministry or related field from an accredited institution consistent with our doctrinal beliefs.
- At least 5 years of experience in a similar ministry position is preferred.
Responsibilities/Ministries:
- He shall be an ex-officio member of all boards and committees and counselor of all departments.
- Oversee the activities and positions of the Associate Pastor(s) and any ministers-in-training.
- Conduct meetings and supervise the paid staff and conduct staff evaluations in consultation with the deacon board of the church on a regular basis.
- Ensure the discipleship and training of ministry staff members and current and future leaders of the church.
- Pastoral care: Shepherding the congregation in cooperation with the Associate Pastor(s) to include but not be limited to visitation, counseling, and prayer for members and prospective members in their homes, nursing care facilities and hospitals. Making referrals to competent individuals/agencies outside the congregation when needed.
- Take advantage of opportunities to fellowship with other pastors formally or informally.
- Oversee financial accountability and overall financial health of the church.
- Lead Sunday morning service with church staff and lay participants, in a way that engages the congregation spiritually, intellectually, and emotionally, motivating commitment and a strong desire for active participation.
- Preach effective sermons that help congregants develop spiritually and relate faith and scripture to life.
- Plan weekly Sunday service, in conjunction with the Minister of Music.
- Lead communion service.
- Lead in planning special services.
- Encourage congregants to discern their own spiritual gifts, develop their gifts and their own leadership abilities, and engage in the ministries to which they are called.
- Other duties as assigned.
Accountability:
- The Senior Pastor is accountable, first and foremost, to God and His word, and secondly to the board of deacons and the membership of Heartland Baptist Church.
- This position, and the job description, will be evaluated annually.
Leadership:
Join with the deacons in exercising spiritual oversight.
