In the fall of 1973, five families saw the need for Bible teaching and taking a stand on issues other local churches were not achieving. They formed the Church of the Open Bible and started to meet in Lisbon, and in 1978 bought the current property at 16700 Old Frederick Road, Mount Airy, although we did not move here until two years later.
In 1984, the church renamed itself Lisbon Bible Church, and in 1986, the church hired Pastor Wally Webster. In the 1990’s we moved to our current location, and in 1998, we changed our name a second time to Mount Airy Bible Church. In 2006–2008, we built the Education Wing.
Today, about 600 attend on Sunday mornings. Our in-person ministries reach families as far as East Baltimore, Thurmont, Brunswick, and Rockville, while online, our services and ministry teams reach worldwide to Indonesia, Ukraine, Ireland, Russia, etc.
As a body of believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, we are committed to and exist to produce mature disciples of Jesus Christ so that “in all things, He might have the pre-eminence” (Colossians 1:18; Matthew 28:19-20).
We, as a body of believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, are attempting to serve Him with a philosophy of ministry guided by these five principles:
Missions: winning the lost in the world to Jesus Christ
Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 1:8; 2nd Corinthians 5:18
Majesty: leading the congregation to worship the Lord
1st Corinthians 10:31; Ephesians 1:6, 12, 14
Maturity: discipling the believers to maturity
Ephesians 4:11-16; 2nd Timothy 2:2
Ministry: mobilizing the believers to serve Jesus Christ
Romans 12:3-8; 1st Corinthians 12:1-31
Membership: belonging to a local body to experience shepherding,
fellowship, and accountability
2nd Corinthians 6:14-18; Hebrews 13:17
