Mount Calvary Baptist Church is a historic, Christ-centered, Spirit-led congregation committed to glorifying God and serving humanity. Rooted in faith since 1923, we are a praying people shaped by perseverance and purpose, dedicated to serving the “Total Man”—spiritually, educationally, socially with compassion. Known as “The Little Church on the Alley” and “The Church Where Everybody Is Somebody,” we honor our legacy, embrace innovation, and move forward in faith to impart the Word and impact the world.
Founded in September 1923, Mount Calvary stands as a historic landmark in the Morgan Park community of Chicago. From humble beginnings in the basement of a member’s home on Steuben Street, God planted a vision that has flourished for more than a century. In 1924, the congregation moved into its first permanent structure at the rear of 1259 West 111th Street. This modest building became affectionately known as “The Little Church on the Alley,” a name that continues to reflect our humility, faith, and spiritual foundation.
Throughout seasons of growth, transition, challenge, and triumph, Mount Calvary has remained anchored in the Word of God. Even during periods of national hardship and uncertainty, the church endured through prayer, unity, and trust in God’s direction. As the congregation grew, Mount Calvary expanded its facilities and ministries, preserving sacred memories while preparing space for future generations.
The Mount Calvary Baptist Church has been in existence for 102 years. Currently the active membership is approximately 335, there are 25 ministries. The church is prayerfully seeking a full-time pastor who is called by God and equipped to effectively preach and teach the Word of God. The candidate must be able to fulfill the spiritual needs of the congregation through visits, prayer, conducting weddings, funerals and administering the ordinances of the church. The candidate must also possess the biblical and spiritual qualities as outlined in I Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9, Acts 6:4 and Matthew 28:19-20.
