Chinese Evangel Mission Church is a multi-generational, multilingual Christian congregation located in the Lower East Side / Chinatown neighborhood of New York City. Our church family includes English, Cantonese, and Mandarin-speaking members and reflects the diverse cultures of the surrounding community. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Summer Youth Ministry Internship provides an opportunity to explore ministry in a diverse urban church setting. Programs will be conducted in English. The intern will gain hands-on experience in children’s and youth ministry through participation in Sunday children’s programs and a six-week Vacation Bible School (VBS) outreach during July and August. The intern will work closely with pastoral staff and ministry directors to support program planning, teaching, and relationship-building with children and families.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this internship is to:

●  Provide practical exposure to youth and children’s ministry in an urban church.

●  Develop leadership, teaching, and relational ministry skills.

●  Encourage spiritual growth and vocational discernment for those exploring ministry.

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants should:

●  Be enrolled in an accredited Christian college or university pursuing a degree in Christian Education, Youth Ministry, Pastoral Studies, or a related ministry field.

●  Have completed their junior year prior to the start of the internship.

●  Demonstrate a growing Christian faith and a desire to serve in ministry.

●  Be willing to work in a multicultural and multilingual church environment.

●  Be willing to complete a background check.

●  Agree to and adhere to the church’s Statement of Faith and ministry values.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The intern will:

●  Assist with Sunday morning children’s ministry (teaching support, activities, classroom management).

●  Help plan and facilitate the six-week Vacation Bible School program.

●  Participate in curriculum preparation, setup, and program logistics.

●  Build positive relationships with children, youth, volunteers, and families.

●  Support ministry events and occasional outreach activities.

●  Attend weekly check-ins and ministry planning meetings with pastoral staff.

EMPLOYMENT LENGTH

Approximately 8–10 weeks during the summer (June–August), including preparation time for the VBS program and participation during the six-week VBS sessions in July and August. Exact start and end dates will be determined in consultation with the selected intern.

WORK SCHEDULE

Approximately 40 hours per week, including Sunday mornings and participation in VBS programming and ministry activities throughout the week.

SUPERVISION

The intern will report directly to the Pastor and work closely with the Children’s Ministry and VBS program directors. Regular mentoring meetings will provide guidance, feedback, and ministry reflection.

SPIRITUAL GROWTH

The internship is designed to nurture the intern’s personal faith and ministry discernment. Opportunities may include:

●  Weekly spiritual reflection with the supervising pastor

●  Participation in church worship and prayer gatherings

●  Conversations about urban ministry, cross-cultural service, and pastoral leadership

EVALUATION

The intern will receive:

●  Ongoing feedback through weekly check-ins

●  A mid-summer progress conversation

●  A final evaluation and ministry reflection at the conclusion of the internship

COMPENSATION

●  Housing provided for duration of internship in New York City

●  Summer ministry stipend

●  Mentorship and ministry experience in an urban, multicultural church setting

TERMINATION

Chinese Evangel Mission Church reserves the right to terminate the internship at any time for any reason. The intern may also terminate the internship at any time during the summer. If the internship is terminated by either party, housing and stipend support will cease at that time.
